The latest EP release from City Fritter
5 compelling tracks recorded with producer Jim Watts
(Emmylou Harris, String Cheese Incident, Gram Rabbit)
exploring the edgier, rock & roll flavor of the Fritter.
"Big City Breakdown" is a trip into the city at night.....and the trip back home again.
"Going into the studio this time, we had a lot of songs to choose from, but not a lot of time to record so we decided on an EP for this release." says Jewels. "We really wanted to craft these tracks and layer in a lot of guitar parts so we went for quality instead of quantity.I think it leaves you wanting more" continues Johnny. When producer Jim Watts came on board, the direction of the EP became clear very quickly - Watts was drawn to the more guitar driven, classic rock influenced material. Setting the twang aside for this one, Watts and the Fritters were able to hone in on a grittier, more bluesy tone. The name of the record came in an instant when they realized the common theme to these 5 songs - a release of familiar patterns, a return to Johnny's rock & roll roots, and an escape from the stress of city life. "Eventually, things have to break down to be built back up again, that's what these songs are about." says Jewels. Johnny Nation is able to flex his considerable guitar muscle on "Road Weary Troubadour" and "Eyes Wide Open" as well as revealing a bouncy, pop jangle on "Look Like Now". Christopher Hawley adds haunting and powerful slide guitar work on "Change My Fate" and "Build Me A Treehouse" and, as always, Jewels' warm vocals and harmonica add heart and soul to the mix. David White and Stefano Ashbridge have evolved into a solid, rhythm section, keeping things moving with tight, driving beats.
10 track CD release from City Fritter recorded with producer Eric Corne (Lucinda Williams, Michelle Shocked, Glenn Campbell) at Dusty Wakeman's legendary Mad Dog Studios, headquarters of LA's modern Americana sound. Rootsy, fresh, and real "FROM THE OCEAN TO THE DESERT" is a postcard from life. The songs were written by Jewels and Johnny Nation in Topanga Canyon and Joshua Tree, California, on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, in Baja, Mexico and on the travels in between those magical places. These songs take you on a musical road trip through states on the map and states of mind.
This disc includes the upbeat and ridiculously catchy "DON'T YOU KNOW" featured in the 20th Century Fox feature film "FLICKA" starring Tim McGraw as well as the tender ballad "NOT YOUR GIRLFRIEND ANYMORE" and the hilarious instant classic "TAWDRY MOTEL".
Johnny's Nation's warm acoustic and twangy electric guitars interplay with Chris (THE SPECIALIST) Lawrence's shimmering pedal steel and jangly 12 string. Fabien Jolivet's encyclopedic knowledge of drum styles - dirty Bakersfield shuffles to jazz inflected fills - lay the foundation for these songs to take flight. Jewels and Johnny's organic harmonies float over carefully layered instrumentation mixed perfectly by Eric Corne so that each song realizes its full sonic potential. The result? A complete, cohesive work clocking in just under 40 minutes. Listeners will want to let it spin again and rediscover the joy of this ride over and over. Entertaining and engaging from beginning to end, take the trip "FROM THE OCEAN TO THE DESERT"
